Santiago Serrano (Villacañas, Toledo 1942) has more than sixty solo exhibitions on the international circuit and its presence is inescapable in publications on European painting of the twentieth century. His works are part of large collections and institutions such as the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía, the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Barcelona, the Marugame Hirai Museum in Kagawa in Japan, the Pilar Citoler Collection, the Helga de Alvear Collection or the Marcelino Botín Collection, among others.
Santiago Serrano is one of the most important authors of the generation that emerged in the seventies, and one of the few that today keeps intact those ethical and aesthetic principles that marked a before and after in the development of Spanish art, from expressive singularity, nonconformity and experimental commitment.
In the words of the critic and art curator Mariano Navarro, the work of Santiago Serrano has always been linked to an abstract and conceptual aspect, following a line similar to that of artists such as Marc Rothko, Piet Mondrian, Kazimir Malevich or Barnett Newman. He has researched both the constituent elements of his discipline and has constituted a universe of references, mythologies and poetic resources, as well as creating an impressive range of textures and shapes that we can find in his work.

Geometrías del Silencio
The first solo exhibition of Santiago Serrano at Marquesa Gallery represents a milestone in Serrano’s artistic evolution, who continues to stand out as a key figure in art.
The works that make up “Geometrías del Silencio” were made between 2022 and 2024, a time of renewed introspection and experimentation for the artist. In this series, Serrano masterfully explores the relationship between geometric structure and internal silence, offering an introspective vision that invites deep reflection. Each piece is a reflection of their ability to transform the abstract into intense visual experiences.
The exhibition highlights Serrano’s ability to combine the precision of his geometric compositions with exceptional chromatic delicacy. Through the use of innovative metallic structures and formats, Serrano transcends the conventional limits of art and creates an environment that challenges habitual perceptions, leading the viewer to a space of reflection and serenity.
“Geometrías del Silencio” not only highlights Serrano’s technical mastery, but also his talent for evoking the essence of silence and introspection through his work. Each piece is a visual dialogue between light, shape and color.
As the critic Luis Francisco Pérez Redondo emphasizes in his recent text on the individual, "the gemetrization of these fabrics, which is at the same time very soft and delicate, acquires its maximum expressive power largely thanks to a refined "poeticization" of the planes and structures that make up the works; being the geometric helped, very important, by the wise use of some colors that seem to come from ancestral paintings of Tuscan or Tuscan times:
At Marquesa Gallery, we are delighted to present this exhibition that celebrates painting in its most evocative and meaningful form, with a pivotal figure of Spanish contemporary art. His career, marked by innovation and authenticity, perfectly reflects the curatorial values that guide the gallery.
