Biography

Portrait of Santiago Serrano

Santiago Serrano (Villacañas, Toledo, 1942) develops a sustained research on the elements of painting: surface, color, matter, gesture and time. Linked to the renewal of Spanish abstraction since the 1970s, it has built its own language that keeps the dialogue between sensitive experience and conceptual thinking open.

His production includes painting, work on paper and pieces that incorporate wood and metal. The texture, the interruptions of the plane and the void are not simple formal resources: they introduce new ways of perceiving the presence of the work and its relationship to space.

With more than sixty individual exhibitions, his career is documented in collections such as the Reina Sofía Museum, the MACBA and the collections Pilar Citoler, Helga de Alvear and Marcelino Botín. Marquesa Gallery opened its exhibition program with Geometrías del Silencio in October 2024, curated by Mariano Navarro. In 2025 he presented Ahuecar: 50 años de pintura, curated by Mariana Rey.
