This was the opening of Musitar, the Laura Segura exhibition at Marquesa Gallery

Last Friday, February 13, we inaugurated at Marquesa Gallery Musitar, the first solo exhibition of Laura Segura in the gallery, curated by Sema D’Acosta. And from the first moment it was noticed that it was not any inauguration.

It was an afternoon with very good attendance, but with something different in the environment. More than the typical quick tour of the room, most people stopped. They watched calmly. They were talking in a low voice. There was curiosity, but also a sense of recollection that is not so common at an opening.

A contemporary art exhibition in Madrid that is perceived beyond the visual

One of the aspects that attracted the most attention was the direct relationship that is generated with the works. They are not pieces that are understood at a glance or that seek to impact immediately.

Laura works with materials like wool, wood, wax, soap or natural fibers, and that completely changes the experience. There is a sensory dimension very present, even when the play is not played. The smell, texture or the way they are built makes the viewer approach in another way.

During the inauguration, many people shared similar feelings: memories, associations with the natural, with the domestic or with certain traditional gestures. Without the need for complex explanations, the work connects.

The process as an essential part of the work

Another recurring theme in the afternoon conversations was time.

The Musitar parts are not intended from the immediacy. There is a slow, very manual work behind, where the process is as important as the result. You can clearly see that when you see them live.

There is no artifice or excess. Everything is quite refined, but at the same time full of hours of work, repetition and attention to detail. That balance is what makes the works work so well in the room.

The curatorial work of Sema D’Acosta can be seen in how the exhibition is conceived. It’s not just a sum of pieces, but a meaningful journey.

There is a clear coherence between the works, both materially and conceptually. Connections are generated between them without the need to explain them, and the visitor gradually understands the artist’s universe.

In addition, the assembly reinforces that idea of experience: suspended pieces, others closer to the ground, some that invite to surround them ... Everything contributes to the visit being dynamic, but without losing that sense of calm.

Very good reception at the opening

The opening brought together very different profiles: regular collectors, artists, professionals of the sector and also people who visited the gallery for the first time.

And the interesting thing was to see how everyone found an entry point to the exhibition.

It is not a closed sample or difficult in the wrong way. On the contrary, it is accessible from the sensory, from what everyone recognizes or interprets. That makes it work very well with different audiences.

Many visitors stayed longer than usual, going back over some pieces or commenting on details they had not seen at first.

An exhibition to see with time in Madrid

If one thing was clear during the opening is that Musitar is an exhibition that deserves a quiet visit.

It is not so much a sample to “understand” as to experiment. To look at the materials, the small gestures and how the pieces are made.

In a context where many contemporary art exhibitions in Madrid seek the immediate, the work of Laura Segura goes in another direction: more leisurely, more connected with the manual and with a way of doing that has a lot to do with the origin and with the natural.

Art Workshop with Laura Segura in Marquesa Gallery

Within the program of the exhibition, an art workshop with Laura Segura will take place in the gallery on Thursday, March 5 at 7:00 p.m.

It will be a creation space guided by the artist, designed to explore artistic sensitivity from her own language and work process. An unusual opportunity to get closer to his way of understanding art from within.

The workshop also has a solidarity component: the collection will go entirely to the Welcome Foundation, supporting its Maternal Home, a project that offers accompaniment, training and support to mothers in situations of vulnerability.

Access: limited capacity by reservation

Admission: voluntary contribution (100% for the Host Foundation)

The exhibition Musitar, by Laura Segura, curated by Sema D’Acosta, can be visited at Marquesa Gallery (Calle Marquesa de Argüeso, 38, Madrid) until March 28, 2026.
