José Luis Ceña builds a pictorial universe where childhood appears as a territory of exploration, transformation and discovery. Through children’s figures wearing animal masks, his works place the viewer in an ambiguous space where the game ceases to be only an innocent gesture to become a way of constructing identity.

Masks function here as symbols of what we project, imagine, or try to understand about ourselves. Each animal embodies deeply human emotions, impulses and behaviors, while children seem to inhabit an instant of transition in which it is still possible to experiment with who we are before social roles and structures end up defining us.

With a painting full of sensitivity, stillness and a certain strangeness, Ceña generates images that connect directly with the memory and the personal experience of the viewer. Her characters, silent but intensely present, invite us to reflect on the masks we choose, those we inherit and those we continue to wear almost without realizing it.
