Lauren Januhowski (Houston, Texas, 1992) is an American artist based in France. Her work brings together autobiographical narratives and the stories of women around her through printed fabrics, sewing, embroidery and assemblage. Family memory, intimacy and relationships between women inform compositions in which bodies, gestures, words and scenes from everyday life coexist.
She earned a BFA at The Cooper Union, New York, in 2015 and graduated in Printed Image from the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris in 2020. Her training in printmaking combines with sewing skills passed down by her mother and grandmother. Working from digital collages, her own photographs and found images, she develops patterns, prints fabrics and constructs her pieces through cutting, stitching and embroidery.
Monotype printing, translucent organza and glass beads allow images to unfold across different layers. In Fever Dreams, a series begun in 2024, dreams and uncanny experiences give rise to figures that overlap, fragment or reappear. Connections to American quiltmaking and oral storytelling place these processes within an exploration of how experiences are passed on and how women are represented.
In 2024 she received the Prix de l’Abbaye de Maubuisson and undertook a residency focused on the archives and the history of the women who lived at the abbey. She returned to this contemporary art center for the group exhibition Mandorla, les métamorphoses du sacré, held in 2025–2026. This dialogue between history, belief and personal experience extends the narrative dimension of her textile work.
Also in 2024, she was a Villa Swagatam resident at the Kalhath Institute in Lucknow, India. Collaboration with master embroiderers and close attention to the city’s architecture, colors and spaces led to Walking in Lucknow. The series incorporates zardozi embroidery, beads, and satin and organza appliqué, connecting the encounter with a new place to women’s stories, family ties and experiences of transformation.
Artist’s books form another strand of her practice. Healing From Shadows, made with Cha Gautier and published by Quintal Éditions in 2023, translates her images into risography and was shortlisted for the Prix Révélation Livre d’Artiste at Multiple Art Days. In 2026 she published Grounding Rituals with Butter Press, drawing on her experiences in Maubuisson and Lucknow. The project received ADAGP’s Stampa grant, which supports the creation of original graphic works.
Her career includes exhibitions at Magasins généraux, the Grande Halle de La Villette, BimBam Gallery and Börjesson Perotti, where she presented Council of Keeping in 2026. She was selected for the 2026–2028 residency at Artagon Pantin. At Marquesa Gallery she presented What we invoke (Lo que invocamos), her first solo exhibition in Spain, curated by Victoria Rivers and held from April 10 to May 30, 2026. The exhibition brought together five years of work and explored the transition from the textile surface to a spatial experience that invites viewers to move around the works.
