Biography

Portrait of Candela Muniozguren

Candela Muniozguren (Madrid, 1986) is a sculptor whose work explores the relationships between structure, empty space and balance. Her compositions are built primarily in steel, sometimes combined with wood, and open towards their surroundings through planes, curves and visible joints. Color distinguishes the parts and establishes rhythms that change the perception of the whole as the viewpoint shifts.

She graduated in Fine Arts from the Complutense University of Madrid and broadened her education through study periods at Universidade de Vigo and Marmara University in Istanbul. In 2011 she received the UCM Sculpture Department’s Ayllón scholarship and recognition from Ayllón Town Council and the university’s heritage program. These early experiences preceded a career focused on sculptural construction and its relationship with inhabited spaces.

The playful character of her work coexists with precise planning. She explains that she begins with drawings, develops models in foam board or wood, and transfers the project to a digital model before production. Architecture, design and the Bauhaus are among her references. Her assemblages recall construction games, while the choice of proportions, supports and visual paths introduces a sensory dimension into geometry.

In 2018 she presented a solo project with Galería Bea Villamarín in Art Madrid’s One Project program. Her exhibition history includes shared presentations such as El espacio que construye, with Rebeca Ferrero, and Lo certero es soñar, with Richard García at Galería BAT Alberto Cornejo. In 2020 she received the Flechazo Award, shared with Violeta Maya and Isabel Alonso Vega, following a vote by the participating artists.

Large-scale commissions allow this investigation to engage directly with architecture. La esencia de lo visible was installed at Hospital La Arruzafa in Córdoba in 2018 for its twenty-fifth anniversary. It was followed by Cronotopía at Barcelona’s Diagrame building in 2022 and Suma Qamaña in the atrium of Partenón 12 in Madrid in 2023. The latter, measuring 14.5 feet (4.42 m) in height and belonging to the MERLIN Properties collection, proposes a meeting point within the building.

In 2024, Paradores de Turismo de España acquired Holismos for its art collection and for display at the Parador de Molina de Aragón. The work was installed in the lobby that September, before the hotel opened in 2025. Its inclusion in a public collection extends her exploration of color, the relationships between parts and the everyday experience of sculpture beyond the exhibition room.
