Biography

Portrait of Borja Barrajón

Borja Barrajón (Madrid, 1985) develops a sculptural practice centered on stone and the relationships between volume, light and space. He began his training at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Complutense University of Madrid, in 2006 and completed his degree in 2013. Working from his studio outside Madrid, he uses mainly marble and alabaster to develop an abstract language of geometric forms, openings and balances.

Carving involves a sustained relationship with the material: each decision changes a work’s visual weight and the relationship between its parts. His sculptures give as much importance to open spaces as to the mass that defines them. Alabaster, black Calatorao marble and white Macael marble respond differently to light, which shapes the reading of surfaces, cuts and cavities. Form emerges through sustained observation.

His solo exhibitions Reflexiones sobre el vacío in 2014 and La identidad de la forma in 2017, both at David Bardía, placed space and formal construction at the center of his development. In 2018 he exhibited at Cafmeyer in Belgium. He later participated in BAT Alberto Cornejo’s Diálogos program: El silencio de la materia, with Isabela Puga in 2022–2023, connected sculpture and painting through geometry; Detener la mirada, with Teresa Carneiro in 2026, further explored the experience of looking.

The public dimension of his work took shape in 1423, an ensemble inaugurated on September 9, 2023 in Pamplona’s Plaza del Castillo. Winner of the city’s first International Urban Sculpture Competition, organized by AEDAS Homes and the City Council, it commemorates six hundred years of the Privilege of Union. Three open blocks interact and define a space accessible to the public: the relationship between forms also becomes an invitation to meet.

His distinctions include first prizes in the Manuel Martínez Bragagnolo competition in 2009 and 2011, an acquisition award from the Complutense University’s Sculpture Department in 2011, and the Special Cosentino Prize at the Third International Sculpture Competition of Fundición Capa, awarded to Humo in 2023. In 2024 Sombra de humo received the first Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla Prize and the Gold Medal at the 73rd International Autumn Exhibition, twelve years after Difracción received an honourable mention in the same program.

His career includes sculpture symposia in Albalate del Arzobispo and Medio Cudeyo, alongside fairs such as Art Madrid, London’s Affordable Art Fair and Lisbon’s JustLX. His work is represented in public collections including the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo Obispo del Vellosillo in Ayllón, whose municipal inventory records Arcadia from 2011, and the Museo Marqués de Valdecilla. These collections, exhibitions and public settings extend a sustained investigation into how stone can organize space and transform perception.
