Verónica Domingo Alonso (Bilbao, 1989) is a multidisciplinary artist who lives and works between Bilbao and Madrid. Her research connects place, space and territory with historical memory and social awareness. She studied Fine Art at the University of the Basque Country and Norwich University of the Arts, before extending her printmaking training through the master’s program run by the University of Castilla-La Mancha and Spain’s Royal Mint.
Drawing is the starting point for a practice that also encompasses printmaking, painting, photography and installation. Her abstract compositions engage with calligraphy and Asian art, using rhythm, pause and trace as compositional elements. In works on paper and fabric, the relationship between surface and space allows the image to be read both as a material record and as an evocation of place.
In Triple Valla, landscape becomes a reflection on borders and migration. Fences, cables and dividing structures function as more than forms, pointing towards a political and human reality. This work received production support from Fundación BilbaoArte in 2021 and was presented at the Eduardo Úrculo Municipal Art Gallery in Langreo in 2022, following her Art Nalón award in 2021.
Research into air-raid shelters occupies a central place in her recent projects. Baix Terra began during Cultura Resident 2022 at Las Cigarreras in Alicante and was exhibited at the Municipal Arts Center in 2023. Working from seven Spanish Civil War shelters, she explored marks, inscriptions and traces on their walls to approach experiences that remain hidden beneath the city and give them a perceptible presence.
In 2023 she was selected for the Basque Artist Program of the Guggenheim museums in Bilbao and New York. That year she also received the Pilar Juncosa and Sotheby’s grant for a stay at London’s Slade School of Fine Art for The Blitz. This project extended her interest in the memory of shelters to the British context, combining historical research with an installation proposal about protective structures from the Second World War.
Metralla Zauriak, presented at Montehermoso in 2025, explored the air-raid shelters of Vitoria-Gasteiz and the fortifications at Ketura. In 2026 the Gernika Peace Museum hosted De Bilbao a Gernika. Sendas de la desmemoria as part of MemoriArtean. Both exhibitions develop a relationship between surviving traces, transmitted accounts and artistic interpretation, addressing the fragility of places that preserve memories of war.
Printmaking also holds a prominent place in her professional career. Rastro Indubitado, a collagraph made in the BilbaoArte workshops, received the Calcografía Nacional Young Creators award in 2021. Alongside her studio practice, she teaches printmaking and works in curating and cultural management. This connection between research, production and the sharing of technical knowledge extends a practice that approaches images as a form of understanding.
