Biography

Alfonso Sánchez Pérez (Alicante, 1976) is a visual artist based in Sant Joan d’Alacant. He graduated in Biology from the University of Alicante in 1998 and is self-taught as a painter. Before dedicating himself professionally to art, he developed businesses concerned with the environment and responsible consumption. His scientific background informs an exploration of the origins of life, evolution and humanity’s relationship with nature.

His paintings develop through layers that retain traces of earlier gestures. Chance and intuition shape a process accompanied by music, particularly rock, jazz and flamenco. Relationships between marks, signs and figures emerge as he works; later, he may simplify the composition to emphasize particular elements. The result remains open to different readings, without imposing a single narrative on the viewer.
Prehistoric art occupies a central place in his imagination. The paintings of Chauvet and Altamira, and especially the orant figures at Pla de Petracos in Alicante, interest him as forms of expression and communication preceding writing. From the evolution of hominids to imagined futures, his work explores continuities between our animal nature, human awareness and the ability to imagine what we do not know.
This inquiry continues in One question, several answers, an exploration of what we are through the figures of the monkey, the human and the gods. It sits alongside bodies of work such as Darwin’s voyage, Dune and Origins. In Marquesa Gallery’s selection, Shakti, Kali and An honest bridge, made in 2025 with oil, acrylic and Indian ink on canvas, bring together material, drawing and gesture within his pictorial language.
In 2021 he presented Del rosa al amarillo at Galería QUO in Alicante. The following year, Dance of Words won first prize in the third Sánchez Butrón Abogados charity painting competition on human rights, devoted to freedom of opinion and expression. His solo exhibition Tengo un plan followed in 2023 at the municipal library in Sant Joan d’Alacant, bringing contemporary uncertainty into dialogue with the memory of early painted signs.
He participated in Crea Zona Oberta, an exhibition of the sixth Biennal de València Ciutat Vella Oberta held at the Museu de la Ciutat in 2023. His work has also circulated through galleries, fairs and specialist platforms, and Saatchi Art devoted a One to Watch profile to him in 2025. In 2026 he extended his activity by directing Claroa Gallery in Sant Joan d’Alacant, connecting his studio practice with a project for exhibiting and supporting other artists.
