Biography

Portrait of Sol Felpeto

Sol Felpeto (Venezuela, 1990) is a painter and illustrator based in Madrid. She grew up between the Spanish capital and Buenos Aires, where she began veterinary studies before turning towards artistic training. In Madrid she studied Fashion and Creative Direction at the Istituto Europeo di Design, completing her studies in 2016. Her interests in animals, images and storytelling became the meeting point of these paths.

One strand of her work transforms recognizable images from art history through animal characters. In her reinterpretations of Picasso, Frida Kahlo and Bosch, cats and dogs replace the original figures and shift the meaning of the scene. This approach combines attention to composition and color with humor that invites viewers to recognize the source and discover what has changed.

The artist describes her painting as a practice with two modes. In one, a carefully finished technique and references to Cubism and Surrealism articulate personal stories; in the other, expressive brushwork and drawing on canvas shape more spontaneous reinterpretations. Both share feline protagonists, color and a narrative purpose: the initial visual impression opens onto stories and messages revealed through closer looking.

Her vocabulary also draws on cinema and popular culture. Acrylic paintings such as Forrest Cat and Ivan Doggo vs Rocky Balboa show how titles contribute to the transformation of familiar characters. Wordplay extends the visual play, connecting the viewer’s memories with a distinctive world of animals adopting human attitudes and situations.

Her career has expanded through exhibitions in Europe and Asia. In 2019 she was awarded the Banditto Gallery artist residency in Tuscany. In Taiwan she took part in Green: save abandoned animals at the National Taiwan Arts Education Center in 2021; the following year she presented the solo exhibition Cats through history at 42 Art Space in Beijing. These presentations place animal imagery within both group projects and individual explorations of her painting.

Her recent solo exhibitions include Bad Gatos at Gallery RED in Mallorca in 2023 and The Grand Slam, organized by Espinasse31 at Hotel Le Méridien in Monaco in 2025. Art fair appearances include Art Miami with Maddox Gallery in 2021, Estampa with MDA Gallery in 2024 and Urban Art Fair in Paris with Lucha de Gigantes in 2025. At Art Madrid 2026, Banditrazos Gallery presented a selection of her paintings in the General Program.
