Biography

Portrait of Javier Tercero

Javier Tercero (Valdepeñas, 1970) works primarily in painting, with explorations of photography, collage and sculpture. His training combines drawing and painting workshops with studies in Artistic Photography at the Escuela de Arte y Superior de Diseño Antonio López in Tomelloso. The observation of nature runs through his practice: plant forms, organisms and growing structures become starting points for images that retain an open relationship with recognizable things.

Collage plays an important role in his process. Paper fragments, painted surfaces and cut-out shapes allow him to test relationships that he later transfers to canvas and changes as he works. His paintings develop through successive decisions: adding, removing, shifting and balancing. This search for synthesis produces compositions in which curves and encounters between forms invite the eye to move through the image, without imposing a single interpretation or a fixed stylistic category.

The relationship between media is also part of his inquiry. In 2008 PTH—Paraíso Temporalmente Habitable—combined paintings with sculptures made using materials including polyurethane, copper and branches. The 2013 photographic series Etéreo reveals another aspect of this interest in transforming perception. These works place his painting within a practice that explores different ways of turning visual experience and forms from his surroundings into images of his own.

In Universos cíclicos, begun in 2021, he rearranges stimuli from the organic world to imagine forms of life and relationships between bodies, surfaces and color. The series Nidos-Nudos, Encapsulad@s, Latidos and Mimesis develop further variations on this inquiry. Mirada oculta, presented at Ciudad Real’s Museo del Quijote in 2022, brought together part of this work and revealed its material range, from acrylic and spray paint on canvas to compositions using pastel, charcoal and collage on paper.

In his recent work he combines acrylics, enamels and spray paint, adding an industrial spray gun to his tools. The move from small studies to larger canvases leaves room for the composition to change as it is made. Devenir, held at the Museo Municipal de Valdepeñas from April 24 to June 7, 2026, brought together around thirty works made over the preceding five years, revealing this development as a continuous process of experimentation.

His exhibition history includes the University of Castilla-La Mancha, the Museo López-Villaseñor, and cultural venues and galleries in Madrid and Castilla-La Mancha. His distinctions include an Honorary Medal at the 2021 López-Villaseñor competition and acquisition awards in several competitions. In 2024 Nebulosa was selected for the Provincial Council of Ciudad Real at the Valdepeñas International Exhibition; in 2026 Albacete City Council agreed to add Inmarcesible #4 to its municipal art holdings.
