Neill Wright (Johannesburg, 1985) is a South African artist whose practice brings together painting, printmaking and sculpture. He trained at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town, graduating with distinction with a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Art (Honors) in 2007 and sharing the Simon Gerson Prize. In 2009 he completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Fine Art specializing in printmaking.
Satire and social commentary played an important role in his early work. In The Hilarity of Reality, presented at CIRCA on Jellicoe in 2013, he used humor to examine contradictions in South African society, media culture and consumption. Blizzard Head, in 2018, carried these concerns into a world of abundant vegetation, seductive images and latent threats, where human inventiveness coexists with the capacity for destruction.
His current landscapes grow from an archive of everyday photographs that he crops, combines and transforms digitally. This preparation establishes the composition, while the move to the physical support introduces variations through hand-cut stencils, airbrush, brushwork and palette knife. In A New Solitude, in 2022, this meeting of observation and imagination produced impossible places and sculptures in wood and resin inspired by objects left aside during the painting process.
In This Quiet Company, held in Cape Town in 2023–2024, he explored relationships between control, vulnerability and freedom through collage and sculpture. His carved wooden flowers bring vitality and fragility together: they retain color and movement even when fallen. The contrast between planning and the trace of the hand allows the landscape to become a place of refuge without entirely erasing the unease behind it.
We Turned Off The Road, presented in Johannesburg in 2025, continued this search through landscapes and still lifes drawn from photographs and memories. Wright prepares surfaces through layers of paint, rolling, spraying and sanding; accidents in the process introduce textures and color encounters that alter the planned image. Flowers, imagined paths and views without human figures offer a pause and leave room for viewers to enter the scene in their imagination.
His exhibition history connects South Africa with the United States and Europe. Solo presentations in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Cleveland were followed by Where the Light Gets In in Dallas and Miami in 2023. That year he also participated in Everything in Its (Right) Place, curated by Domenico de Chirico in Milan, and showed sculpture with Everard Read at FNB Art Joburg. His London exhibitions include Southern Light in 2024 and Director’s Selection | Elsewhere in 2026.
