Biography

Portrait of Francesca Poza

Francesca Poza (Mataró, 1965) works across printmaking, sculpture, artist’s books and weaving. Reclaimed paper and thread are her principal materials, transformed into surfaces, reliefs and structures that give writing a physical presence. Her work approaches abstraction through rhythms, woven patterns and empty spaces that evoke memory and intimate experience.

She studied Graphic Design at Barcelona’s Escola Massana and trained in the studios of Jordi Ayné, Jaume Arenas and Guerau Calabria. She expanded this education through experimental printmaking and sculpture at La Rectoria in Sant Pere de Vilamajor, mould-making techniques in Barcelona and textile training at Escola de la Dona. This combination of graphic, sculptural and textile processes underpins a practice that explores paper beyond the printed surface.

By reusing books, Poza shifts attention from linear reading to texture, light and volume. Written fragments retain their relationship with literature while also becoming material for weaving new associations. In her conversation with Carlos del Amor for Art Madrid, she connects this work with the need to leave a trace and with the tension between memory and forgetting.

Publishing and teaching accompany her artistic production. She founded Deep Edicions and directs the Punt d’Estampa workshop in Barcelona, and has also taught printmaking and painting. Her involvement with the collective El llibre en femení places the artist’s book within a context of exchange and shared experimentation. In 2019 she received first prize in that category at the Festival del Llibre d’Artista in L’Hospitalet.

Her exhibition history includes Literatura sin lectura at Alba Cabrera and Poetizar la Materia at Pigment Gallery. She was among the artists in Visions of Catalonia, presented in Barcelona in 2021 and within the In Città program of Homo Faber in Venice in 2022. Solo exhibitions at the Museu del Càntir in Argentona in 2024 and the Museu Enric Monjo in Vilassar de Mar in 2025–2026 extended the presentation of her work in museum settings.

Her distinctions include the fourth Miró&Art competition in 2019 and second prize in the 2023 Sant Jordi three-dimensional art award. In 2024, Castilla entered the BBVA Collection through its acquisition award at FIG Bilbao. The Arte al Límite Collection also catalogs El peso de la nada (2025), made from woven book paper.
