Biography

Portrait of José Macías

José Macías (Cáceres, 1963), also documented as José Macías González, is a painter based in Badajoz. His work approaches landscape as a remembered experience: color, atmosphere and material convey the impression a place leaves behind. His images occupy a territory where references to nature become emotional constructions.

In his Paisajes hiperbólicos, impasto and gesture intensify the relationship between sky and land. The horizon can dissolve, while the surface gains a physical presence alongside the image. The artist connects this exploration with expressionism and informalism, valuing open marks, process and imperfection as ways of communicating immediate emotion.

He works with oil on canvas, panel and paper, as well as pigmented resins and wooden supports. His practice combines small landscapes with circular works and larger reliefs. In Marquesa Gallery’s selection, works such as Río Tinto, Iceland and Sierra de Ambroz appear alongside the Diluvios, which shift the experience of landscape towards the density, sheen and volume of the surface.

Storms and the movement of water run through the Acumulador de tormentas series. The artist explores nature’s creative and destructive forces through materials also used in construction. Material experimentation allows this investigation to extend across painting, relief and possibilities for installation, bringing atmospheric phenomena into the viewer’s physical experience.

Acumulador de tormentas, curated by Lidón Sancho, was presented at Sala Vaquero Poblador in Badajoz from December 2023 to January 2024. In 2024, the Diputación de Badajoz included his work Diluvio azul Prusia in its institutional presentation at ARCOmadrid. In 2025, Galería Arte Joven included his exhibition Diluvio in Badajoz’s La Noche en Blanco program.

In 2026 he participated as an invited artist from Badajoz in DeVAGAR entre bienais at El Hospital Centro Vivo, as part of an exchange with the Bienal Internacional do Alentejo. That year he also featured at Art Madrid with Uxval Gochez Gallery and at Hybrid Art Fair with Espacio Difuso. In the latter presentation, his painting engaged with cinema and a sound recording of a storm.
